Breaking News!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jennifer Hudson is Hollywood’s latest Magical Negro!!!!!
I went to see “Sex and the City” the other day & I was looking forward to seeing it because I was a fan of the HBO series for years. I was also looking forward to seeing another black character in the expanded story that was not just an accessory or sexual object (remember Blair Underwood & Miranda???).
Anyway, I was so disappointed with this highly anticipated theatrical release. First of all, it was too damn long, there was nothing new or excited offered in the 2.5 hour run of the movie. And I really wanna know why OSCAR WINNER Jennifer Hudson took this role. Like a true Magical Negro, she came out of no where improved the life of her white miss & literally disappeared but with a designer Louis Vuitton hand bag that made the women in the audience say “dam that’s a bad bag!”
The other thing that made me shale my head was how Charlotte’s adopted Asian daughter “Lily” was used as the ultimate cute accessory. The little girl was in I don’t know how many scenes but she spoke only twice & the only word that came out of her mouth was “Sex”. That was so not cute.
IMO, J Hudson’s character Louis & Lily could have been totally eliminated & the movie would have not suffered a bit. Shit, how can you fuck up something that already fucked up??? The sad thing for me, was that I’ve seen much better episodes when the series was running.
If you want to see this movie, I suggest you save your money & get yourself a McRib combo from McDonald’s instead.

Yeah, I’ve been going back and forth, would I rather the SATC stayed totally white or had these weird token characters (also Magda, Miranda’s nanny/maid)? It’s not like another well-formed character was going to be introduced at this late date though.

see now i loved the movie! but then again- i had REALLY low expectations of it. i mean- the previews didn’t make it look good, imo. i basically went out of obligation. so i was pleasantly surprised.
i did think that lily was unnecessarily in every seen. i kept wondering why she never spent time with her dad. like you pointed out- her character was real accessory-like
and i couldn’t stand hudson’s role. oh, goodness- it was so very typical! ugh! i was hoping for more from what, the 4th Black character of that series (remember that black guy that dated samantha and his hating-ass sister lol lol)

i meant *scene
lily was unnecessarily in every scene

you said: remember Blair Underwood & Miranda???
All of their love scenes made me throw up in my mouth a little. Blair and Samantha Jones? Yes! Blair and Carrie? Yes! Blair and Charlotte? Perhaps! Blair and Miranda? All kinds of wrong!!!

Erin – 1st of all, thx for checking me out!!! Oooo, I should have noted Magda, she is so the perfect Eastern European indentured servant accessory.
I wonder why the show did not include more diversity? A shame but yet I watched!
Shit, Samantha’s run as a lesbian lasted longer than any racial minority character. Hmmmm
Shea – Oooooo, I forgot about Samantha’s jungle fever run. And I knew what you meant, LOL I fuck up all the time. As long as it flows half way decent you are good with me boo!!!
Hijabi Apprentice – “All of their love scenes made me throw up in my mouth a little.” You are me both! Actually the sex scenes with Steve & Miranda made me throw up in my mouth a little! I wonder how her woman felt about her having hot dick & nuts all up on her during those scenes?????

Ive only seen SATH on network television, so I was SHOCKED to see the characters nekkid and actually having sex in the movie! I didnt wanna see these white folks get down like that! Ewwww!
Hudson was a slang-speaking, no-Standard-English-using accessory who, in my opinion, made Black women look bad, cause we’re so pressed for trendy shit, we’ll even rent it!
When I saw the movie, I went to the matinee. Im ok with spending that amount of money, but no mas.

I loved the movie but I am a diehard fan. I can’t wait until it comes out of DVD so I can add it to my complete series collection (yeah, it’s like that!) But I’ve been telling people that if they haven’t seen the series or didn’t like the series then the movie is not going to win them over.
I did find J-Hud’s part to be complete unnecessary. She seemed to me to be playing the exact same character she played in Dreamgirls (or maybe sassy black girl is what she’s going to bring to every movie? Time will tell). The Louis Carrie gave her was ugly as hell, and I was slightly offended by the fact that they think a CS major would want to be someone’s personal assistant. pssshaw!

Lola – What happened in the movie was pretty mild compared to many hot & spicy episodes!!!
Peejai – Oh yeah, you are real die hard! LOL. That bag was very interesting & only usable for one season, so poor Louise would been back on Bag Barrow Steal or whatever in the spring. I’m just saying.
You are right, for those not in the know, this is not a good place to start to be a SATC fan. You mos def need background.

Funny, I have not intention of seeing the movie but I thought it was getting outstanding reviews. I have never seen sex and the city so I have not plans of ever seeing the movie, even though a few lady friends have tried to entice me.
I had no idea that J.Hud was even in the damn thing! Any, I think I will get that Big Mac in stead.

OMO – Dont give in & see it with one of your girls unless the jump off is popping afterwards. Such a waste of time!!!

Le Le from the Chi! Love your site….you keep me hollering at the gig! Ok…I liked the movie however I thought it was completely predictable which I blame the 5 kabillion previews…is just too much! I agree’d with Peejai and was waiting for someone to say it..Jennifer Hudsons’ role in SATC was the exact same as her role in Dream Girls…I felt she shouldnt have taken the role because now she is going to be typcast going forward. I agree the bag was el tackio – how about i’d only carry it once or maybe twice…not a good look for me AT ALL. I am not terribly bothered by the token roles of the maid and the asian daughter. The writer did not veer away from what was written in the series…and I am a die hard fan of the series…have learned a many lessons from that show…love it! I enjoyed the fashion most of all. I am convinced that I can rock the whole shoulder pad thing again! I’d recommend the movie however I’d also recommend that you eat a good meal and have a few drinks before seeing the movie cause it is a little lengthy

Le Le – 1st of all, thx for checking me out!!! Let’s all hope that JH can rebound from this apparent type casting. Shit, even with an Oscar, a nigga still poor roles.
“I am not terribly bothered by the token roles of the maid and the asian daughter. The writer did not veer away from what was written in the series…” When the show was running, I always tuned in without a doubt & the lack of clear diversity did not bother me. When I became more of a race watcher, that became more if a problem for me. I discovered one of my favorite songs thx to SATC; “In The Waiting Line” by Zero 7.
Peace,
