All week, I have been trying to do a “witty” post but I kept drawing blanks on what I have been reading & listening to (bummer). Luckily I checked Racialicious today because the letter below defiantly pulled me out of my little rut of news boredom.
While I think that the mom has a right to make this request, I also think that she needs to home school her little bastard. It is clear to me that she is the type of white person who believes that we (Black peoples) need to get over slavery, totally forget the Civil Rights Movement & live contently in a white oriented matrix.
While reading the letter I sarcastically though that if Lisa was sick of her kid learning about Harriet Tubman & all of the other BHM (Black History Month) regulars, then maybe she should do some research & introduce lesser known pioneers like Emmett W. Chappelle, Fred Shuttlesworth & Granville T. Woods to name a few.
Letters like this one are the kind of thing that got the ball rolling for the end of Affirmative Action in CA & MI (Thanks Ward Connelly you bitch!).

Want an end put to school-endorsed celebrations of Black History Month
Why must our children, no matter what race, creed, religion, etc., be forced to celebrate Black History Month?
As far as I know, this is not a required curriculum yet every year, it consumes the entire month of February.
The schools do not, or shall I say are not allowed to, celebrate other federally recognized holidays (such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Easter).
Children are not required to do book reports about these holidays nor are they forced to listen to biographies over the public address system when it takes away from normal school time. Why is it then, acceptable for Black History Month?
Many children in the schools are not black and therefore have absolutely no reason whatsoever to celebrate Black History Month. This is the exact same thing as many children are not Christian and therefore are not required to celebrate Christian holidays.
I want an end put to school-endorsed celebrations and activities concerning Black History Month.
I no longer want my child to be forced to do a report about a famous black person just because of the month.
I do not want my child to have to listen to stories about Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver every single year during February.
The whole idea of Black History Month is for black people. There is no Asian History Month or English History Month or Middle East History Month or Russian History Month or Australian History Month.
Therefore, none of these groups has the chance to celebrate their heritage or famous people from their heritage.
I am formally requesting that all activities in the school system that are about Black History Month be banned permanently.
Should anyone else out there feel the same way, please take a minute to e-mail your school principal and e-mail the St. Mary’s County board of education at boe@smcps.org.
You can find your principal’s email address at the school Web site www.smcps.k12.md.us.

Back to me:
Do you think Lisa has a legitimate gripe, is she a racist or just another angry white woman & do you think BHM is antiquated & needs to go away?
aulelia / February 15, 2007
Black History Month is important for Black communities in the West. It should be here to stay until the curriculum’s fully include black ethnic history.
This woman is an absolute idiot. The blood of Afro-American slaves created the US. African slaves and Indians forced to work for the British Empire ensured that Britain owned 25% of the entire world in the early 20th century! She needs to do more history.
As for saying that there is no English History Month or Russian — has she forgotten that in many European countries black children such as MYSELF had to do history projects for important examinations on these nations because it was compulsory!!! she needs to do some reading too because russians and english people are Caucasian. Good lord.
Someone please inject her with some knowledge. BHM is important to remind all black people in the world of their roots and heritage. Without that, the chances of a white out are possible.

I agree with Audelia, well said my sister!
I am sickened by the narrow minded people that fight positive black folks. What harm is this doing? There are too many other things to fight against in the world….ie, child molesters living near our schools, teen pregnacy, drugs, bullies….I can go on and on with this subject.
Lisa needs a life and should find something else to devote her energy to.

White/European history month is ever month as it is forced upon us while our history is suppressed. So when Lisa was like there is no English/Russian history, I was like she needs to get a grip. You can pick up any History book & see how little Black history is infused, which is a problem. If you are going to teach about history, you need to tell the whole story.

Although the letter is a bit disturbing, it is not at all surprising. I agree with all of you and your comments. Why must Black History month be taken away because certain people don’t appreciate what it signifies for us as a community? Black History Month is not just for Black people. It is for all people. I think people (White People in particular) fail to realize that without a lot of Black History there would be no White History. And Black History Month would not even be needed if we could depend on White America to give us the credit that is rightfully due to us for our many positive contributions to this country. But I think we all know that this will not happen. So until then she should open her mind and a book so she can get rid of that bigoted style of thinking and before she raises another little racist bastard that will eventually burden the world with more dumb complaints like this.

I bet that if somehow we could flip the script and her child was the “minority” and rarely if ever had people that looked like him or her honored, she’d be writing a different kind of letter. It is unfortunate that we have to set aside a damn month to teach and acknowledge that which should be part of the regular curriculam.
My child is one of only 2 Black children in her class and the only Black History she’s being taught is at home. It benefits all students regardless of color to learn that people of every color have contributed to this rich country.
